The Federal Reserve Board has a tough decision to make when it meets at its Sept. 19-20 meeting. The board will decide if it wants to raise interest rates for the 12th time since March 2022 to stem inflation.

With so many rate hikes, skyrocketing prices on goods and services and an inflation rate that still hovers above the Fed’s 2% target, one may wonder if raising interest rates really works.

Dr. Philip Vinson, assistant professor of economics in ɫ��TV’s School of Business, says yes.

ɫ��TV (GGC) will host two in-person fall Preview Days. The events are from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Oct. 14 and Nov. 18.

Prospective students will hear from members of the Grizzly family about programs of study, admissions, financial aid, student housing and more. Participants will be able to tour GGC’s campus and talk to student ambassadors about their experiences at GGC. The event will include food, music and fun giveaways. GGC team members will host selected breakout sessions in Spanish.

Faculty at ɫ��TV (GGC) will be able to broaden opportunities for science students and offer state-of-the-art equipment, thanks to two National Science Foundation (NSF) grants totaling more than a half a million dollars.

An interdisciplinary team of chemistry, biology and physics faculty led by Dr. Kathryn Zimmermann, associate professor of chemistry, received a $203,047 NSF Major Research Instrumentation (NSF MRI) grant for the purchase of an inductively-couple plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS).

Service is one of the four pillars of ɫ��TV (GGC), and that means a lot to the 26 GGC students who spent their time Saturday volunteering for the greater good during the college’s service day event.

Working at the Lawrenceville Co-op, the GGC Microfarm and the GGC Care Pantry, students learned about the inner workings of the areas where they were assigned. And they learned something more.

The Department of Exercise Science and Physical Education at ɫ��TV (GGC) seeks volunteers for participation in a 10-week exercise program. The program is designed to help exercise science students sharpen their hands-on skills, while gaining experience in a practical fitness setting.

Volunteers will have a pre-training and post-training fitness assessment performed, which will include:

• Blood pressure
• Body composition
• Cardiovascular fitness
• Muscular strength
• ���������Գ�����
• Flexibility

Enrollment at ɫ��TV (GGC) maintained its upward trajectory as students started classes for the fall semester.

Preliminary numbers from the college show enrollment at more than 12,000 students (new and returning) which is 9% percent above fall 2022.

“With more than 4,000 new students, we’re excited to welcome our largest incoming class since 2019,” said Dr. Michael Poll, GGC’s vice president of Enrollment Management and Institutional Research.

Poll said the college has seen an uptick in retention with returning students up 8.5 percent. New students, he said, are up

ɫ��TV’s (GGC) campus came alive this morning as students began the fall semester. Officials say that preliminary enrollment numbers are trending upward compared to this time last year.

Resident students had already moved into their rooms on campus in previous days, and most commuter students were busy buying books in the bookstore or locating their classrooms.

College move-in day is typically a time of anticipation, exploration and newfound independence. That wasn’t lost on ɫ��TV (GGC) students who moved into the campus residence halls this week.

From tearful goodbyes from parents to excited introductions with new friends, students navigated the maze of dorm rooms, carrying dreams, hopes and their cherished belongings.

Officials say that campus housing is at full capacity for the fall, which is a healthy sign of engagement on the college’s campus.

Move-in day kicks off GGC’s Grizzly Welcome, which features 10 days of

ɫ��TV (GGC) connected with area businesses and employers at its annual workforce development breakfast.

Participants heard from GGC deans and administrators about the college and its academic offerings. They also met with the college’s faculty and internship coordinators to discover workforce needs and pair them with students vying for internships.

Participants remarked on the quality of GGC’s students and programs. Now in its second year, the event’s success allows area businesses to work with the college to fill internships and exchange feedback on programs and

ɫ��TV (GGC) contributed more than $521 million to the economy of Gwinnett County and the Atlanta metropolitan area during fiscal year 2022, according to an  released by the University System of Georgia (USG). That’s up more than $8.8 million dollars over last year.

Including its capital outlay for construction projects, GGC has generated more than $5.8 billion in cumulative economic impact since the college has been included in the study.
